A Database Management System (DBMS) is a software system that manages a database. The DBMS belongs to the infrastructure software facility, together with the operating system, data dictionary, user-interface management software etc. (see Middleware). Component 3.11 of the SCT is devoted to DBMS (in contrast with the actual database, which is described in Components 2.11 and 2.12). In technical literature, the DBMS systems are normally categorized as RDBMS (which supports the relational approach) and ODBMS (based on the object-oriented method).
